Finisterre means the end of the earth, but for my clients, Mexican artists Josué Vázquez Saldaña and Selene Márquez Martínez, it is a way of working. Finisterre, in its essence of ever-approaching completion, embodies the two artists’ lives, where there is no difference between their philosophic, artistic, public, and private life.
The project interrogated Oaxaca’s walled street condition by setting the street-facing facade back and inviting an episodic progression of rooms between the public realm to the private back of the site. The primary material used is adobe brick, a traditional building material, allowing local builders to easily collect resources and construct sustainably.
